REVIEWED: Dyson Pure Humidfy+Cool vs. Carepod One

Maintaining a proper humidity level is essential for indoor health. As detailed in our previous articles, dry air can cause a whole host of health issues, including dry skin conditions, cold and allergy symptoms, and even increased infection rates for airborne pathogens like COVID-19.

Looking for the right humidifier, however, can be a daunting task at first. After all, there are so many brands, labels, and names available on the market that it can seem a bit overwhelming. So when it comes to choosing the right humidifier for your household, it all depends on your needs, preferences, and budget, and we're here to help.

In this article, the first of our "REVIEWED" Series where we take a closer look at different humidifier models on the market, we compare and contrast the popular Dyson Pure Humidify+Cool with Carepod's own model, in order to help you better understand the ins and outs of these devices.

Operation

Dyson Pure Humidify+Cool is a unique hybrid: it's an air purifier and evaporative humidifier all built into one device. The filter part uses a 360 degree Glass HEPA Filter to capture airborne particles such as various pollutants and irritants, while the humidifier part feeds water into a 3D mesh evaporator and projects vapor at an airflow speed of 84 gallons per second.

Carepod is an ultrasonic humidifier built with premium grade 304 stainless steel. With an oscillating drum, it uses ultrasonic waves to produce 1,700,000 times frequency vibration and vaporize water into 1-5 micron ultra-fine particles. An air pressure unit then disperses this mist into the surroundings, which can effectively hydrate indoor spaces of up to 500 square feet.

Features

The Dyson air purifier/humidifier makes use of automated sensors that can detect airborne particles and monitor particle concentration as well as temperature and humidity. In fact, the device can display real time on-screen reports of indoor air quality, particle and gas levels, filter life, and even maintenance alerts.

Also featuring an auto-humidify setting, the device will self-activate whenever the room's humidity drops below the desired level. Dyson Pure Humidify+Cool even includes 3 distinct airflow settings — breeze mode, fan mode, and backwards mode — to control and adjust at your convenience.

Carepod's humidity control function determines low, medium, or high intensity of mist. The device features a time scheduling function — you can choose to leave the humidifier on for 2, 4, or 6 hours before auto shut off, or keep it continuously running. Carepod also has a maintenance alert, as a warning alarm and red light will be displayed in case of product failure.

Design

Dyson Pure Humidify+Cool, while sleek and smooth in appearance, is perhaps too large to be considered a portable humidifier. With a circular base that measures more than a foot in radius, the device also includes a tall cylindrical ring that protrudes upward, making the device approximately three feet in height. The humidifier is best placed on the floor in a large living area so as not to take up too much space.

On the other hand, Carepod's model is small, light, and compact. Cylindrical in shape and approximately 10 inches in every dimension, the patented device has received several notable awards for its impressive design.

"This product offers a perfect example of how to place a complex functional device within a clean and simple outer design," offers iF World Design Guide. "The form is attractive yet also matches the function as a humidifier, while its color and outer design, including the top display and touch buttons, make intuitive usage possible."

Carepod is a convenient, portable humidifier that easily fits on a small desk, night table, or countertop and be moved around throughout the day without much hassle.

Cleaning

Dyson's fully-sealed filtration system uses 29 feet of borosilicate microfibers to help capture 99.97% of allergens and pollutants as small as 0.3 microns, according to their website. Inside the humidifier part, the water tank is exposed to UV light light, which reportedly kills up to 99.9% of bacteria.

For the cleaning process, Dyson Pure Humidify+Cool does include an automated deep clean cycle to remove bacteria and mineral build-up that can be activated with a touch of a button. However, many customers have reported experiencing trouble using this feature, with the system frequently getting stuck or simply not working properly.

Meanwhile, Carepod allows for ease of cleaning by hand. The device is built with an innovative three-piece design that can be easily detached. These parts of the humidifier that need to be cleaned — the tank, vibrating element, and cover — can all be washed safely in boiling water, and intuitively reassembled afterwards.

The stainless steel interior is made of the same kind of material used in hospital settings and is disinfectable, resistant to corrosion, and fully recyclable. In fact, Carepod's model has shown 99.99% sterilizability against bacterial growth in research trials, higher than that of any leading brand.

Price

Dyson Pure Humidfy+Cool comes with various digital features and advanced technologies, and as expected, this is reflected in a price tag typically upwards of $700 for the unit alone. However, the air purifier part requires filter replacement with recurring costs that can amount to hundreds of dollars annually.

Carepod, on the other hand, is a simple and portable humidifier that doesn't require filter replacements. It's equally effective and hygienic as Dyson's and at only a fraction of the cost — currently listed at $275.

(PRO TIP: it may actually be more cost efficient to purchase a separate air purifier in addition to an affordable humidifier like Carepod than to buy an expensive hybrid.)

Final Thoughts

In summary, Dyson Pure Humidify+Cool and Carepod are both great humidifiers, though with several key differences.

Dyson's air purifier/humidifier is a hybrid appliance that features various monitoring devices and different airflow settings. It relies on an internal self-cleaning system. If you're highly tech-savvy, have the extra money to spend, and don't mind the device's unconventional design or large size, then Dyson Pure Humidify+Cool might be right for you.

On the other hand, if you're looking for a small yet powerful device that is clean and affordable, Carepod may be the better option. Carepod is easy to use, easy to clean, portable, and equally as effective and hygienic as Dyson's model.

Whichever you decide on, just know that any quality humidifier, if used properly, can serve great benefits for your overall health and well-being, as well as your home. (Read More).
